Motion

Motion offense

Motion is a rule, not a single arrow. The board still needs a first pass, a cut and the screen that follows.

Motion is a rule, not a single arrow. The board still needs a first pass, a cut and the screen that follows.

A simple rule

Start five-out. The first pass to a wing triggers a cut through the lane, or a screen away from the ball. Write the rule in the title so the drawing is not only a picture.

Spacing

Keep the other two players wide. If everyone follows the cutter, the lane closes. Use a different color for the cutter and leave the screeners on the perimeter until they move.

The next read

After the cut, show one continuation: a handoff, a post touch or a second pass. Stop there. A second frame, saved as a copy, is clearer than ten arrows on one court.

Frequently asked questions

What is motion offense in basketball?

Motion is a spacing rule, not a single called play. The useful diagram still shows the first pass, the cut and the screen that follows.

How do you diagram a 5-out motion set?

Place five players outside the lane, draw one pass and the cut that fills the next spot, then the screen. Write the rule in the notes so the arrows are an example, not the whole offense.

What belongs in the notes of a motion diagram?

Write the rule the players must keep, such as pass and cut, or screen away after the catch. A second saved copy can show the next read.
