The double pivot

The two midfielders sit in front of the back four. One can step to the ball, the other keeps the center. Draw them close enough to pass, wide enough to cover the lanes.

The number 10

The attacking midfielder starts between the lines, not on top of the striker. Show one receive: facing play, or a lay-off into the winger. That is enough for one diagram.

Wide players

The wide attackers can pin the full-backs or come inside. Pick one and write it in the title. Duplicate the play when the same shape has a different wide role.

Frequently asked questions

How does a 4-2-3-1 formation work?

Two midfielders sit in front of the back four, a number 10 plays between the lines, and one striker leads the line. The wide players stretch the back line.

How do you draw the double pivot in a 4-2-3-1?

Place both pivots between the center-backs and the number 10. Draw the first pass you want, either into the 10 or out to the wide player, and note which pivot steps up.

Where should the number 10 stand on the diagram?

Between the opposition midfield and defense, close enough to receive and turn. If the 10 drops beside a pivot, draw that as a second saved variation.
