4-3-3

4-3-3 shape

A 4-3-3 is a rest defense and an attacking shape. Draw the lines first, then one movement you actually want to coach.

A 4-3-3 is a rest defense and an attacking shape. Draw the lines first, then one movement you actually want to coach.

The lines

Four defenders, three midfielders, three forwards. On a full pitch the distances matter: the full-backs are not already on the last line of the attack. Leave room for the winger to receive.

One movement

Choose a single action, such as the full-back overlapping the winger or the striker dropping between the lines. Draw that run. A 4-3-3 with every possible run is no longer a plan.

The rest of the team

When the full-back goes, show who tucks into the back line. Write that balance in the notes. Save a second play if you also want the shape without the ball.

Frequently asked questions

How do you set up a 4-3-3 formation?

Place a back four, three midfielders and three forwards on the full pitch. Draw one movement, such as a fullback overlap or a winger’s inside run, so the shape has a job.

What is a 4-3-3 used for?

A 4-3-3 gives you width from the wingers and a single striker. The diagram should show who joins the attack and who stays as rest defense.

Should 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 be the same saved play?

No. Save each shape on its own. Duplicate the 4-3-3 when you want a variation, and keep the 4-2-3-1 as a separate play.
