Reading the setter

The middle starts in front of the net and moves when the set leaves the setter’s hands. Show two possible commits: to the left pin and to the right pin. Use one solid arrow for the choice you want and a light one for the fake.

The pin blocker

The outside or opposite blocker sets the line or the angle. Mark which shoulder is open. If both blockers close the line, say so in the notes.

The defense behind

The players in zones 1, 6 and 5 move with the block. Draw the digger who takes the tip over the block. A block diagram without the floor defense is only half the play.

Frequently asked questions

How do you diagram a middle block?

Mark the middle blocker reading the setter, the pin blocker on the antenna, and the defenders behind the block. One board should show one set you are taking away.

What should the notes say on a blocking diagram?

Write which set the block is reading, such as a quick middle or a high set to the pin. The arrows then match that one read.

Can the block and the serve receive be the same play?

Keep them separate. Serve receive is your pass to the setter. The block is your read of their setter. Two plays are easier to call in a timeout.
