5-1

5-1 rotation

A 5-1 uses one setter. The useful board shows where that setter is in this rotation, and who passes when the setter is in the front row.

The setter’s zone

Zones run from 1 at the serving position to 6 in the middle of the back row. Place the setter in the zone you are coaching. The other five keep their opposite, outside and middle roles.

Front row or back row

When the setter is in the back row, three attackers stay in front. When the setter is in front, one attacker is in the back row and the pipe becomes available. Write which of the six rotations this drawing is.

The pass

Show the serve-receive shape for this rotation only. Three passers are enough. The note should say who is hidden on serve receive and who hits out of the middle.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 5-1 volleyball rotation?

A 5-1 uses one setter in all six rotations. When the setter is in the front row they can attack. When they are in the back row they set from zone 1.

How do you draw a 5-1 on a court diagram?

On the 18×9 m court, mark zones 1–6, put the setter in the zone for that rotation, and draw the serve-receive pass to the setting spot.

Should every 5-1 rotation be a separate play?

Yes. Duplicate the rotation and move the players. Six clear boards teach the overlap better than one court with every rotation stacked on it.
