Volleyball serve receive is a passing shape, not a rotation chart. Show who passes, who hides and where the setter starts.

How many passers

A three-person receive covers more court. A two-person receive hides an attacker. Pick one and place only those passers inside the seams. Everyone else stands where they will attack.

The target

The setter’s target is usually between zone 2 and the net, just off the right sideline for a right-side setter. Mark it. The pass arrow should aim there, not at the setter’s feet.

The server

Add the opposing server and the seam you expect them to hit. A note such as “short seam between 1 and 6” tells the passers what this drawing is for.

Frequently asked questions

How do you draw a serve-receive formation?

Place the passers, leave the setter as the target, and mark the server. Draw the pass from the seam you want to the setting zone.

How many passers should a receive diagram show?

Show the number you actually use, usually two or three. Write that number in the notes so the next rotation copies the same shape.

Where does the setter stand during serve receive?

The setter starts near the setting zone you want, often the right side of the net in a 5-1, and stays out of the pass. Mark that spot before you draw the pass.
