Before the serve

Zone 1 is to the right of zone 6, zone 6 is to the right of zone 5, and the front row stays in front of the matching back-row player. Place six players so those neighbors are legal.

The switch

Draw the movement that starts as soon as the serve is contacted. The setter runs to the target. The hitters take their pins. Use a second color so the serve-receive spots and the attacking spots are not the same marks.

A common fault

Write the overlap you do not want, such as the setter starting to the left of the middle back. One illegal picture, clearly labeled, prevents the argument on the court.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rotation overlap in volleyball?

Before the serve, each player must stay in the correct order relative to the players beside and behind them. After the serve, players may switch.

How do you draw overlaps on a tactics board?

Place zones 1–6 in serving order first. On a second copy, show where each player switches after the serve. Do not draw both moments on one court.

Why save the serve order and the switch separately?

The serve order is the legal rotation. The switch is where you want to play. Separate diagrams stop a player from lining up in the switched spot before the serve.
